The South Padre Island Birding & Nature Center offers a 5-story tower with spectacular 360-degree views, plus exhibits, a half-mile of boardwalk nature trails, and bird blinds. Everything is located on a 50-acre site on the wetlands of the Laguna Madre Bay, and it is one of the nine World Birding Center sites located in the Rio Grande Valley. Boardwalk trails include interpretive panels that provide interesting educational insights, while strategically placed blinds allow visitors to get a close-up view of the wildlife. With over 300 recorded species, the Island has become one of the premier birding locations in the western hemisphere. Founded in 1977 by Ila Loetscher, Sea Turtle, Inc. has dedicated itself to the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of sea turtles on South Padre Island. Their goal is to educate the public about endangered sea turtles and their marine environments. Visitors are offered an up-close look at rescued sea turtles that are undergoing rehabilitation, as well as the seven sea turtles that call Sea Turtle, Inc. home. Allison, a permanent resident at Sea Turtle, Inc., lost three of her flippers during a predator attack, and was the first sea turtle in the world to use a successful prosthesis! During hatchling season, Sea Turtle, Inc. will hold public hatchling releases in the early hours of the morning.
